Australian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China visits Adelaide
Australia China Business Council event 20th October, 2017
The Australia China Council (SA) hosted a morning with the Australian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China Ms Jan Adams. Her Excellency played a significant role as Chief Negotiator overseeing the conclusion of the Free Trade Agreements with China. The Ambassador gave an insightful talk updating us on current events in China, and highlighting our good relationship with China and how the Free Trade Agreement sets Australia apart through the Air Services Agreement, the most liberal China has ever provided, through Education opportunities, online visa arrangements and the tourism opportunities that it helps to facilitate. The Ambassador also spoke about agreements between Chinese authorities and Australian Federal Police to work cooperatively to counteract drug trafficking.
A panel discussion followed Her Excellency's speech which also provided updates and nuggets of information to provide us with an optimistic outlook for Australian engagement with China and the economic benefits through a variety of opportunities awaiting local South Australian businesses.
Panel members, Keith Thomas, CEO of the Port Adelaide Football Club and Brett Hill, Director of Marketing for the South Australian Tourism Commission joined the Ambassador in providing positive recent case studies of successful engagement with China in the arenas of sports diplomacy and tourism respectively. As always, the President of ACBC (SA), Sean Keenihan provided just the right questions and comments flavoured with his inimitable subtle humour as he thoughtfully guided the panel discussion.
Sean identified two vital components for the 'step change' in South Australia's growing engagement with China... Direct flights from China to Adelaide, which are on the increase, and the bold progressive initiative of the Port Adelaide Football Club in taking the AFL to China and in doing so opening up a new platform for South Australian businesses wanting to do business in China.

Cultural intelligence essential as engagement with China shifts from a trickle to a flood
May 2016
Engagement with China Shifts from trickle to flood. Cultural intelligence is essential.
May 20 The Australian
Speaking Chinese is a big help but cultural intelligence is essential says Rowan Callick, The Australian China Correspondent, Beijing. Agreed! And it is absolutely essential to have a sense of Chinese history and culture and of trends to be a successful player, as he points out.
Cultural intelligence is far more than local knowledge and experience even though this knowledge is indispensable. Culturally intelligent leadership is crucial and the need to be culturally intelligent extends to each member of the board room.
Cultural intelligence (CQ) is a globally recognised way of assessing and improving effectiveness for culturally diverse environments. CQ offers leaders an overall repertoire and perspective that can be applied to a myriad of cultural situations. CQ is rooted in rigorous research conducted by scholars around the world and is absolutely vital in order to be China-ready, to be prepared to negotiate the complexities of this ancient culture where life and business are conducted in a different way to Australia and where cultural value preferences can often be far from similar.
